Thesis or dissertation is an important part of academics of M Tech and Ph.D. research students. A degree is not awarded to any student who has not submitted a thesis. Students often find it difficult to prepare a thesis and are puzzled about thesis format. They are confused about where to start, what topic to choose, how to write, what is thesis format, how to complete and many more such queries. This increases the chances of rejection of thesis. Also, there should not be any plagiarism also. But among all these queries the major tension of the students is the format of the thesis – what should be the font size, line spacing, numbering, margins, tables, figures etc. It should be noted that a good format creates a long-lasting impression.
Note the following steps and guidelines to make a thesis with a good format. These are the characteristics and format of thesis writing.
Components of a good Thesis Format
A good thesis format sample should have the following main components:
- Title Page
- List of Tables
- List of Figures
- List of Abbreviations
- Table of Content
- Main Body
Front Page/Title Page of thesis
A title page consists of the following elements :
Title of the thesis
‘in partial fulfillment of degree’
The sequence should be same as written above.
Title of the thesis
Project submitted in partial fulfillment of
Masters in Technology
Computer Science and Engineering
After the title page, the next page is the certificate page. Here is the sample for the certificate page
“It is certified that the work done in the thesis having the title “Title of the thesis”, by “Name of the Student”, has been carried out for the partial fulfillment for the award of the degree of “Name of the Degree” to the student.
Signature of Student :
Signature of Supervisor
Name of University
The next section is the declaration made by the scholar about the work he had carried out in the thesis. Check out the following sample for declaration.
I declare that the work is carried out by the author alone. Whole or any part of the work has not been submitted before in order to qualify for any other academic degree. The content of the thesis is the result of work which has been carried out since the date of approval of the research program. All the ethics procedures and guidelines have been followed properly while preparing the thesis.
Acknowledgement is a statement made by the student stating that what all he has done is true and should be accepted.
Following is the sample for acknowledgment:
“I would like to thank my thesis supervisor (Name) of the (Department) at (University Name). He always helped me whenever I was in need of him in my research or writing. He guides me in the right direction and also assisted me at every step. I would also like to convey special thanks to the experts who were involved in the validation of this research project. Without their valuable participation and assistance, the validation of the thesis could not have been successfully conducted.”
An acknowledgment is immediately followed by an abstract. An abstract is a short summary of an article particularly of research, thesis, or any deep analysis of a specific field and is often used to help the reader quickly to find out the paper’s purpose. An abstract is shown at the beginning of a script.
The abstract is an integral element of your thesis or research paper. It is presented at the beginning of the thesis and it is the first detailed description of your work read by an external examiner. It gives the first impression of the content of the thesis. The abstract should be about 250-350 words and should not contain any table, diagram or figures.
In an abstract, the first paragraph is about the introduction, aims, and objectives.
The second paragraph highlights the outline of the work carried out.
The third paragraph is the concluding one.
List of tables
It consists of details of all the tables used in the thesis along with their page numbers
List of figures
It consists of the list of all figures and diagrams as used in the main text of the thesis.
List of abbreviations
It is a list of all abbreviations i.e shorthand notations listed in an alphabetical order.
Table of Contents
A table of contents or simply referred to as “Contents” is a list found on a page before the beginning of a written work listing down its chapters or section titles or brief descriptions with their corresponding page numbers.
The Structure of the table of the contents of thesis:
This is the Thesis Format sample of table of contents
The text of the thesis: It consists of the following elements:
- Body of the thesis
Other elements of the thesis:

It may be a book or online medium.A bibliography is a complete list of all of the sources/mediums you have used (whether referenced or not) while your work was in progress. A bibliography should include the authors’ names, the titles of the works, the names and locations of the companies that published your copies, the dates your copies were published and the page numbers of your sources.
Appendices – Appendices provide additional information to the main thesis and should always appear after the references/bibliography. Examples of materials included in the appendix are interview questions, participant letters, forms, surveys, questionnaires, supplemental tables, figures, graphs, image etc.
Important points to be taken care of in Thesis Format:
